According to Variety, a live-action Assassin’s Creed series is being developed at Netflix.

Netflix and the game developer, Ubisoft, struck a deal that will also include an animated and anime series based on the best-selling video game franchise. The showrunner position is still vacant, but Ubisoft Film and Television’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik will executive produce the live-action series.

“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ brand into an iconic franchise,” said Altman, head of Ubisoft Film & Television – Los Angeles. “We’re thrilled to create an ‘Assassin’s Creed’ series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ universe.”

Over 155 million copies of various titles in the franchise have been sold to date since Assassin’s Creed debuted in 2007. The game’s premise is a war between the Assassins and the Templars. Advanced technology is used to access the genetic memories of Assassins in different time periods to track down powerful artifacts called Pieces of Eden.

“We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that ‘Assassin’s Creed’ is beloved for,” said Peter Friedlander, vice president of original series at Netflix. “From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”

A live-action Assassin’s Creed was released in 2016. The film adaptation starred Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix). It grossed over $240 million worldwide, but critic reviews assassinated the move.

This isn’t the only upcoming Netflix live-action series based on a video game. Capcom’s Resident Evil series is also in development. The season is expected to consist of 8 total episodes running at one hour each. There’s no official release date for Assassin’s Creed or how many episodes it will have in a season.
