The much-anticipated Disney Plus TV show Hawkeye has begun filming in New York, and social media is already a buzz about the Marvel Universe show that will follow the adventures of Clint Barton, played by Jeremy Renner.
The actor himself posted a photo on Twitter confirming the news.
The events of the show follow Hawkeye in a post-Avengers: Endgame world, and is rumored to explore Hawkeye’s years as the vigilante Ronin, which was briefly mentioned in the film. He’ll also be mentoring a new Hawkeye, the character of Kate Bishop, who will be played by Oscar nominee and singer Hailee Steinfeld.
Fans of the source material know that Bishop will eventually inherit the Hawkeye mantle and leads the Young Avengers in the future.
Syfy.com recently looked at the events of Ronin in Endgame, and how the character was modeled after Brian Michael Bendis’ New Avengers run in 2005, when the archer became a ninja-like vigilante, trading in his arrow for a samurai sword.
Left shattered by the loss of his family, Ronin seems to lose all sense of right and wrong and starts killing cartel gang members in Mexico.
In the Marvel Universe, Hawkeye’s backstory has been told in parts in the Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, which both displayed the gentler side of Barton—before the terrible things happened in his life.
In the film, Ronin is said to be “actively murdering people” in Mexico, though that’s never shown on-screen. All we really see of the character is his facing off with Yakuza in Japan—a storyline right out of the comics.
That came in New Avengers #11 when Bendis tapped Maya Lopez (Echo) to become the mysterious ninja and Ronin helps in taking out Yakuza in Tokyo. Ronin is soon recruited by Captain America via Daredevil to infiltrate the evil Hand clan after they and Madame Hydra kidnap the Silver Samurai.
The Hawkeye show is expected not to shy away from his past, but also serve as a new path for Clint Barton as he makes Hawkeye viable again.
