Scream 5 debuts with a loud box office performance during the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with a projected 4-day gross of $35 million. That’s enough to dethrone Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Scream, scoring 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, is good enough to revive the classic late-90s slasher franchise for Paramount and Spyglass, who partnered on the reboot.

Even with the omicron variant and another surge in COVID-19 cases, Scream has a strong 3-day domestic weekend gross at an estimated $30.6 million. Overseas, the slasher film grossed $18 million from 50 markets, with the United Kingdom leading with $3.4 million.

Scream brings in the younger moviegoers who have been more inclined to return to theaters. Ticket sales between males and females were almost pretty balanced at 53 percent male versus 47 percent female.

67 percent of all ticket buyers for were between the ages of 18 and 34. Scream performed best in the western region of the United States. The south and the northeast also performed well with the midwest and southwest not so much.

Spider-Man: No Way Home dropped to number 2 in its fifth weekend with an estimated four-day haul of $26 million, which includes $20.8 million for the three days. By Monday, the third Tom Holland Spider-Man movie will become one of only four films ever to pass the $700 million mark at the domestic box office as it hits $703.9 million.

Scream comes more than 25 years after the late Wes Craven’s original film hit the big screens. The new film is the fifth title in the franchise and a direct sequel to 2011’s Scream 4. Scream 5 is the first not to be directed by Wes Craven.

Scream 5 is directed by Matt Bettinello-Olpin and Tyler Gillet. Scream veterans Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Heather Matarazzo, and Roger L. Jackson (Ghostface voice) return while Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Dylan Minnette, and Jack Quaid join the cast.

In Scream 5, a new Ghostface-masked killer pursues a group of teenagers trying to learn about Woodsboro’s past.

Scream is now playing in theaters.
