Morbius is on the move again. The Jared Leto film is now releasing on April 1st due to the omicron surge. It was set to debut in theaters on January 28th — a release date that has already been pushed a couple times by Sony and Marvel because of the pandemic. In January 2021, Sony announced that the film would move from October 2021 to early 2022.
The Morbius film, starring Jared Leto, is about Dr. Michael Morbius. He’s a scientist who suffers from a rare blood disease. In trying to find a cure, he turns himself into a living vampire instead.
Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Tyrese Gibson, and Jared Harris also star in the Jared Leto film. Morbius is directed by Daniel Espinosa.
Based off the footage from the Morbius trailer, Michael Keaton who played Vulture in Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Homecoming will apparently reprise his role and appear in some capacity in the upcoming film.
The first trailer for Morbius suggested for the first time that Sony Pictures’ Marvel Universe is connected to Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not just with Michael Keaton’s Vulture, but also with signs calling Spider-Man a murderer.
The Jared Leto film has now been delayed more times than Sony’s other Marvel property, The New Mutants. That movie was delayed multiple times in 2018 after X-Men: Dark Phoenix was pushed back. When things moved further into 2019 and 2020, the movie industry was hit hard due to the pandemic. The New Mutants was delayed four times. Morbius is now facing the same fate or even more.
The good thing fans can anticipate with Morbius is that the multiverse has been cracked open after the events from Spider-Man: No Way Home. Other than the Michael Keaton appearance, fans will flock to the theaters in hopes to see some bigger connections to the Spider-Verse and/or the Venom-verse.
“If you’ve seen the last Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, you know the multiverse has officially opened,” Leto said in a previous video address. “There’s all kinds of opportunities for villains to meet up and maybe nurture their more sinister intents.
Fans will just have to wait and see when Morbius, starring Jared Leto, flies into theaters now on April 1st, 2022.
