The third Spider-Man film from the partnership between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios/Disney comes out this Decemember and according to Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland, it might just be the last one for a while. It seems that the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy is coming to an end.
“We were all treating [No Way Home] as the end of a franchise, let’s say,” Holland tells Entertainment Weekly. “I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy. We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”
This doesn’t necessarily mean that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man is leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But it does indicate that solo Spider-Man projects might hit the pause button for a while. There’s a chance Spidey could be revisited later on his journey as one of Earth’s mightiest heroes where he’s less of a teenage superhero. Holland’s Spider-Man could also take on bigger roles in Avengers films or make appearances in other Marvel Studios projects.
Tom Holland first debuted as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War when he was recruited by Tony Stark as his protegé. Holland went on to have two solo movies, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. He had a big part in Avengers: Infinity War and had the sad, but memorable scene when he was turning into dust saying his last words, “Mr. Stark, I don’t feel so good.” He would then come back from being snapped out of existence to join the final battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.
Whatever the future holds for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, his buddies, and the Multiverse, we’ll find out when Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters on December 17th.
