On Nov. 19, the live-action Cowboy Bebop will premiere on Netflix, and the streaming giant has unleashed some fresh images for the much-anticipated show. Based on one of the most popular anime shows of the ’90s, Cowboy Bebop tells the story of a group of space bounty hunters and their adventures.
The new Cowboy Bebop images, which were first posted on @NetflixGeeked Twitter account, show the characters of Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Faye Valentine (Daniela Pineda), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and the Welsh Corgi playing Ein, the “data” dog.
The photos replicated some specific shots and moments from the anime that fans will surely remember.
Fans have been worried about the look of the characters, as earlier attempts to turn popular anime into live-action have failed previously—especially attempts at Ghost in the Shell and Netflix’s own Death Note. So, getting the look right to honor Hajime Yatate and Shinichiro Watanabe’s notorious series was important to everyone involved.
According to Game Rant, Spike’s blue double-breasted suit and light yellow shirt are basically a carbon copy of his animated look, though the costume department made some significant changes to outfits worn by Faye Valentine and Jet Black, with much darker tones.
Two characters not in the sneak peek were Vicious (Alex Hassell), the main antagonist in the show, and Julia (Elena Satine), Spike’s former lover, but both will definitely be part of the series.
One way Netflix hopes to attract original watchers of the show and anime fans is by utilizing the series’ original composer Yoko Kanno, whose “Tank!” is highly regarded as one of the all-time best anime openings. This will get the show started on the right foot for sure.
The Netflix show is scheduled for 10 episodes. There were 26 episodes of the anime Cowboy Bebop, and here’s hoping that Netflix has plans to exceed that number with the live-action version.
