For all the Resident Evil fans out there wondering about the reboot film. According to director Johannes Roberts, Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City will be a “scary as hell” original story. The film will take viewers to the original place, original characters from the franchise, and back to that “one fateful night”.

In an interview with Variety, Roberts said, “The movie is very much an origin story for Resident Evil. It’s an ensemble piece, and Raccoon City plays a big part and is a character in the movie.” He added, “It’s about this group of people all coming from different angles — some coming into town, some already having grown up in this town — meeting over this one fateful night.”

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City will be different from the original film franchise.

Roberts also mentioned that the tone of the movie is the most important for him. Perhaps, he wants to move away from the feel of the Paul W.S. Anderson Resident Evil films. “The thing that I loved with the games that they were just scary as hell, and that is very much the atmosphere,” he continued. “It’s raining constantly, it’s dark, it’s creepy… and then mixed with the sort of more fun side, especially with the first game, of what’s ’round the corner, that kind of style of storytelling.”

According to Variety, Roberts did admit he’s a fan of the original Resident Evil film franchise, but the director confirmed Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City will tell a completely new story.”It’s not like I was presented something where we’re remaking it. We’re not.” He revealed that the 2019 remake of the second Resident Evil video game is his biggest inspiration for his upcoming film.

“[That] was probably the entry point into the movie for me,” the director revealed. “That game came out and it just blew me away, and from that moment on I think we all knew where we were going with this movie because it was such a wonderful cinematic experience with the tone, the constant dark rain, that sort of aspect of the game.”

He added, “And I just took that and went, “That’s the world I want to work in.'” At the time the official title was released, it was also revealed Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City will feature characters such as Chris Redfield, Clair Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Leon S. Kennedy. Characters who previously appeared in the original Resident Evil video game.

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City is directed by Johannes Roberts and stars Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine and Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield. Joining them are Donal Logue, Tom Hopper, Avan Jogia, Neal McDonough, Lily Gao, and Chad Rook.

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City premieres in theaters September 3, 2021.
