Zack Snyder Casts Doubts that Ben Affleck Would Want to Return For Batman Prequel Series

Now that Zack Snyder has officially released his much-anticipated director’s cut of Justice League on HBO Max, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s led some to theorize that perhaps the director could return to the DC universe and create some more of Warner Bros.’ superhero content.

One idea that fans have been floating about is a Batman prequel series on HBO Max. After all, the audience proved to be there for Justice League and the cable network already has James Gunn’s Peacemaker series coming off of The Suicide Squad in development.

During an interview with MTV News, Snyder talked about some streaming possibilities and the idea that he feels both Martian Manhunter and Deathstroke are exciting characters that would be interesting to look into.

“I think Martian Manhunter or Deathstroke are great ideas for this kind of prequel concept where you’re back with Batman and his young ward and their just doing what they did for 20 years in Gotham,” Snyder said. “That would be an interesting thing.”

When talk turned to Ben Affleck, who played the Caped Crusader in Zack Snyder’s Justice League film as well as Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, the director wasn’t so sure the in-demand actor would be interested in returning to the part if such an idea ever came to fruition.

“I don’t know if Ben would want to do that,” the director said. “Because it’s such a vast canvas you can poke into it anywhere you want and find a kind of small story that would be interesting to tell, you know. I mean, Deathstroke’s origin is an amazing place to go and look.”

There’s also the problematic notion that a series like that could cause some DC brand confusion as the new Gotham PD television series is scheduled to debut on HBO Max after the scheduled new movie, Batman with Robert Pattinson in the title role, is released.

Though Ben Affleck is set to return as Batman in the upcoming The Flash movie with Ezra Miller returning as the Scarlet Speedster.

Most DC fans will tell you, you can never have too much Batman!
