There’s always a little trepidation when rebooting a popular character, and The CW seemed to have more than its share of doubters when it ordered a new series about the DC Comics iconic Superman and Lois Lane.
But judging by the ratings and social media response after Superman & Lois’ debut episode on Tuesday night, it looks like The CW hit a home run.
The new show is quite different than what we’ve seen from Superman before. The CW’s series looks at the Man of Steel as not a superhero, but of a doting father and husband, as he and Lois move back to Smallville to raise their twin sons.
Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch play the titular characters, having been introduced to The CW’s Arrowverse universe as part of Supergirl over the last couple of years.
Twitter was abuzz with positive reviews of the show, and considering the fanbase for the Arrowverse universe is pretty vocal when they’re not happy, this was a very positive sign for both DC and The CW. Comicbook.com even posted a collection of some of the best responses to the show, which included cheers from fans and well known personalities alike.

Also, gotta say in the opening monologue, when Clark meets Lois, I really felt like I was watching Christopher Reeve. @tylerhoechlin really embodied him there and again, incredible! #SupermanAndLois

The reviews ranged from people talking about how much Hoechlin reminds people of Christopher Reeve’s much celebrated time in the role, to the love of the new perspective of the Kents as a family.
Others were impressed with the Easter Eggs contained in the first episode, which included Superman wearing his iconic suit in the opening montage that was similar to the popular 1940s Superman animated films. There was also an homage to the cover of Action Comics #1 as well.
Superman & Lois is expected to bring many of the faces from past comics and movies to the show, though they may not be exactly as remembered. The beauty of this show is that it gets to reinvent the characters for a 2021 audience.
