Things are becoming clearer after WandaVision’s episode 7 when one fan theory actually became true — Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) has been the villain all along. After Agnes lured Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) into her home and down into the basement, she reveals her true self. Agnes real name and identity is Agatha Harkness. And just like Wanda, she’s able to use magic. During the “Agatha All Along” song, Agatha reveals all her doings inside the hex including bringing back a form of Wanda’s brother back to life. This twist to the series is definitely interesting to all fans, but mainstream viewers may be wondering who is Agatha Harkness?
Marvel Comics’ Agatha Harkness Explained
In Marvel Comics, Agatha Harkness is one of the oldest and most powerful witches. She survived the Salem witch trials and acts as a mystic to both good and evil. Agatha became a mentor to Wanda Maximoff, training her to master her mutant “Hex Powers” as a form of magic. Remember, in the comics, the Maximoff twins are born mutants and their father is Magneto with a half sister named Polaris.
It was also Agatha who helped Wanda give “birth” to her own twins with Vision, Billy and Tommy. But conjuring the twins came with a deadly trade-off.
To make Billy and Tommy, Agatha had Wanda borrow shards of Mephisto’s soul to give her boys life. Mephisto is basically the devil in Marvel Comics. He eventually takes his soul back, which erases Wanda’s children from existence. After Wanda goes mad with grief of losing her children, Agatha erases her memories of her twins. Agatha ends up restoring Wanda’s memory when it was learned that Kang the Conquerer was manipulating Wanda to control her power as a Nexus Being. Wanda goes crazy and kills Agatha over the memories and grief of losing her sons. This eventually leads to one of the biggest Marvel X-Men’s stories “House of M”, where Wanda creates an alternate reality.
All of these story arcs are sprinkled all over WandaVision and Hahn’s Agatha Harkness’ reveal can still bring another “big bad” to the series. What makes things even more interesting is that Agatha has ties to the Fantastic Four family. She becomes a mentor to Reed Richard’s reality-manipulating son, Franklin. We’ve seen that the aerospace engineer that Monica Rambeau was talking about was the character who built the vehicle they tried using to go through the hex, but maybe Richards may still make an appearance.
We’ll definitely find out more this Friday and perhaps a bigger reveal will happen in the last two episodes. WandaVision is now streaming on Disney+.
