Mortal Kombat Posters Introduce Characters to Expect in New Movie

On April 16, the highly-anticipated Mortal Kombat movie will make its way to theaters, and be shown simultaneously on HBO Max during its first 30 days. So far, little has been revealed about the film, and its first trailer isn’t expected until later this week.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and based on a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham, the film’s Twitter page offered up a sneak-peak at some of the characters who will be involved in the latest adaptation of the blockbuster video game series.

First up is Cole Young played by Into the Badlands actor Lewis Tan. A staple in the Mortal Kombat films, the character is a washed-up MMA fighter who finds his luck even more on the down turn when a cryomancer warrior from Outworld is sent to attack him by the sorcerer Shang Tsung.

Chin Han from Ghost in the Shell is playing Shang Tsung, described by Warner Bros. as the emperor of Outworld. According to Yahoo Entertainment, in the video game, the character uses his magic to absorb souls to prevent the effects of a degenerative curse. This granted him the ability to shape-shift into his victims and access their powers, something that should translate well to the film.

    Sub-Zero

The poster for the iconic Sub-Zero may garner the most attention. Played by Joe Taslim, the character once known by Bi-Han, a warrior in feudal Japan who now has the ability to control ice. He’s enemies with Hanzo Hasashi, who later transforms into another famous game character, Scorpion, and expect their blood feud to continue on in the movie.

    Jax Briggs

    Sonya Blade

Metal-armed Jax Briggs will be played by Supergirl’s Mehcad Brooks, and Jessica McNamee will be fan-favorite Sonya Blade. Both of these characters are members of a special forces unit that monitors other realms in the video game series.

    Mileena

Newcomer Sisi Stringer will play Mileena, a demented mutant clone of the fan-wielding Kitana. Interestingly, there was no poster of Kitana so it’s unknown if she will be in the film.

Ludi Lin (2017’s Power Rangers) will play Liu Kang, Hiroyuki Sanada (The Last Samurai/The Wolverine/Avengers: Endgame) will play Scorpion, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden (previously played by Christopher Lambert), Josh Lawson is Kano and Max Huang will be Kung Lao.
