Now that the first two episodes of Disney+’ WandaVision have aired, there’s plenty to dissect about Marvel Studios’ first official MCU series.
For one, it’s not the action-packed spectacle that some may have hoped for—at least not yet—as the series delved into a classic television sitcom setting of the Golden Era.
A behind-the-scenes featurette was created to show how the show’s creators pulled off the sitcom vibes and how stars Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda) and Paul Bettany (Vision) got into their characters’ new way of life.
WandaVision was filmed in front of a live studio audience, in the same tradition of many classic sitcoms, and the featurette shows some of what happened during filming.
Jac Schaefer, head writer for the show, channeled shows like Bewitched and The Dick Van Dyke Show, complete with a black-and-white opening and staple characters such as the flustered housewife and nosy neighbor.
However, as the show eluded to and this featurette makes clearer, things aren’t always what they seem and the suburban life that Wanda and Vision are looking to have, may in fact be something else entirely. The featurette shows this overly sanitized reality is a construct, one that government agencies like S.W.O.R.D. are trying to penetrate. So expect some Avengers-like action in episodes to come.
Let’s remember, in the House of M comic book series, the Scarlet Witch constructs a life for herself with children, only to realize it was all just a manifestation of her reality altering powers. In this show, Wanda’s perfect life seems to be that of a classic sitcom—but is it real?
Another hint as to what’s to come for WandaVision is that on the wall of her home is an image of Wonder Man, who comic readers know is a big part of the Wanda and Vision saga, and a stalwart Avenger. Will he pop up and play a role in Wanda’s future? We’re excited to find out.
