Video game enthusiasts were teased yesterday when actor Lewis Tan, who is rumored to have an important role in the upcoming Mortal Kombat film, took to Twitter to announce, “tomorrow will be flawless.”
When the film’s writer Greg Russo replied to the Tweet with a thinking emoji, it pretty much confirmed that something related to the anticipated film would be happening.
And it was! Today, Warner Bros. Pictures released the first images from the live-action Mortal Kombat film reboot.
According to Comicbook.com, Tan’s role has been confirmed as Cole Young.
With the film set to bow this spring, not much is known about the Mortal Kombat reboot, outside of it will be directed by Simon McQuoid and will also star Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Mehcad Brooks (Jax) and Chin Han (Shang Tsung).
Additionally, unlike previous Mortal Kombat films playing to a family-friendly audience, the new version is expected to receive an “R” rating, meaning for the first time, fans of the video game will get to see fatalities represented on the big screen.
Though the images released in Entertainment Weekly look amazing, it’s hard to decipher any sort of storyline or glean any info about the film, so those worried about being spoiled can see them without fear.
They mostly show different characters not doing anything to descriptive, but it’s easy to see that the film will have some darkness to it. One image does show Scorpian’s kunai blade, the signature weapon of the hero.
Produced by Todd Garner and James Wan, the film is set to begin with the blood feud between the clans of Hanzo and Bi-Han and will obviously contain some of the best Mortal Kombat fighting fans of the video game expect.
Mortal Kombat will release simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16.
