Deadpool is officially dragging Wolverine out of retirement (and death somehow) and into the MCU in the new Deadpool & Wolverine trailer that just dropped this morning. Ryan Reynolds returns as Wade Wilson aka Deadpool and X-Men star Hugh Jackman as Logan aka Wolverine in what is being called the third Deadpool movie, but it’s not Deadpool 3. Director Shawn Levy explains it in detail during an interview with Screenrant.
“As far as crafting the Deadpool and Wolverine story, I just felt privileged every day because you’re talking about two massive movie stars in their most iconic roles,” Levy shared. “It also gave me an opportunity. It’s the third Deadpool movie, but it’s not Deadpool 3. It’s a different thing that’s very much Deadpool & Wolverine. And it’s not trying to copycat anything from the first two movies. They were awesome, but this is a two-hander character adventure.”
When Does Deadpool & Wolverine Take Place?
Deadpool & Wolverine is set five years after using Cable’s time-travel device to rewrite the timelines and kill a previous version of himself from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now, Wilson has been taken by the Time Variance Authority and is assigned to bring in Wolverine, join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and save the Sacred Timeline.
Deadpool & Wolverine Cast
Morena Baccarin will be reprising her role as Wade’s fianceé, Vanessa. Brianna Hildebrand and Shioli Kutsuna return as X-Men members Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio along with Stefan Kapičić as the metal-skinned mutant Colossus. Also returning to the cast are Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Wade’s friend and cab driver Dopinder, and Rob Delaney as Peter aka sugar bear. Emma Corrin plays the villain of the film, Cassandra Nova. Nova is the evil twin sister of X-Men leader, Professor Charles Xavier. Plenty of rumors about other X-Men cameos have been circulating since behind the scenes footage was leaked online.
Deadpool & Wolverine is directed by Shawn Levy. This is isn’t the first time Levy and Reynolds and Jackman have worked together. Levy directed Reynolds in Free Guy and Netflix’s The Adam Project and Jackman in Real Steel. Levy directs the first R-rated MCU movie filled with F-bombs, drug references and lots of violent action. Just like the first two Deadpool films.
Deadpool and Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick returned to write the script. Reynolds, Levy and Zeb Wells also had a hand in writing for third Deadpool movie.
Deadpool & Wolverine is set to premiere in theaters only July 26, 2024. You can watch the trailer below.
