The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon executive producer talks about the spinoff’s mutant zombie variants and how dangerous they can be.
The Daryl Dixon spinoff show executive producer Greg Nicotero has offered more details about the show’s new walker variants that Daryl (Norman Reedus) will encounter during his time in France. After the events of The Walking Dead, the Daryl Dixon series will see the fan-favorite character, Daryl, wash ashore in France trying to piece together what happened and how he can find his way back home. During his adventures in France, Daryl will encounter acid zombie variants with blood that burns people’s skin.
Acid Zombie Variants
In a recent interview with TV Insider, Nicotero spoke about the acidic zombie variants, which he referred to as “burners.”
Burners seem to be the prominent variant in France, which will pose a danger to Daryl in the series. Here’s what Nicotero said:
“These zombies have mutated to a point where if they touch or bite you or their blood gets on you, it burns you significantly. It changes all the rules.”
In a The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon preview, it revealed that one of Daryl’s first encounters with a walker in France will be against a “burner.” The acidic variant will injure Daryl due to his inexperience fighting a walker that can harm him without even biting him. Nicotero added that touching a burner can cause damage.
Fast Zombies in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
The spinoff may also feature another walker variant — fast zombies. During the post-credits scene in The Walking Dead: World Beyond, fast moving zombies were revealed as another variant in France. Think Army of the Dead or 28 Days Later. (Though the infected in those movies weren’t classified as “zombies” by movie genre experts. That another conversation for another day.) In the post-credits scene, France was hinted at being the source of the zombie virus so it’s possible that the country is filled with variant walkers.
AMC’s official synopsis of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
“In The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Daryl washes ashore in France and struggles to piece together how he got there and why. The series tracks his journey across a broken but resilient France as he hopes to find a way back home. As he makes the journey, though, the connections he forms along the way complicate his ultimate plan.”
