The new Transformers animated film is rolling out its official title — Transformers: One. The title was revealed at this year’s CinemaCon along with the announcement that Marvel star Chris Hemsworth will be voicing a young Optimus Prime. This will be the first animated Transformers movie since 1986.
Peter Cullen has been the iconic voice of Optimus Prime since the early 80s. After nearly 40 years, a different actor will be rolling out the Autobots in the new Transformers animated movie. Paramount confirmed that Transformers: One will serve as an origin story of arch-enemies, Optimus Prime and Megatron. Fans will see how the iconic leaders of the Autobots and the Decepticons “went from brothers-in-arms to sworn enemies.”
Transformers: One will also feature Atlanta and Marvel’s Eternals star Brian Tyree Henry as young Megatron. The story of the young leaders was previously featured in IDW’s Transformers comic series. The animated feature film will likely take some of that storyline when Optimus Prime was known as Orion Pax.
Other notable voice actors joining Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry for Transformers: One include Scarlett Johansson as Elita One, Optimus Prime’s Autobot commander while away from Cybertron and some say even his love interest; Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee; Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, leader of the Autobots before Optimus took over; and Laurence Fishburn as Alpha Trion, on of the oldest, wisest Transformers and mentor to Optimus Prime.
Former Pixar artist and Toy Story 4 director, Josh Cooley, will direct the Transformers animated film. Ant-Man and The Wasp and Hulu’s No Exit writers already penned the script.
Transformers animation has played a major role in the franchise. The Transformers series that aired in the mid-80s paved the way for the live-action films while CG-animated shows like Beast Wars: Transformers and Beast Machines: Transformers serve as inspiration to the upcoming live-action film, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which is set to reboot the franchise. To this day, the 1986 animated full-length feature film, Transformers: The Movie, is still beloved by fans. It will be almost 38 years old when the new Transformers animated film arrives in theaters.
Transformers: One is set to roll out in theaters July 19, 2024.
