The final episode of The Walking Dead aired on November 20, 2022 and for fans of the hit AMC zombie show, it was bitter sweet. But it’s not the end for some of our beloved TWD characters. They’ll be continuing their adventures in multiple Walking Dead spinoffs.
The Walking Dead was set in Georgia for a long time before the survivors relocated to Virginia and Ohio. Now, The Walking Dead Universe is on the move again. First seen after a post-credits scene in the series finale of The Walking Dead: World Beyond, audiences were taken overseas to a French Lab. AMC chief Dan McDermott teased the TWD Universe is expanding into new territories and exploring real-life “exotic and iconic locations from around the country and world.”
“We are set to bring forth the next iteration of the franchise — two new and anticipated series featuring the beloved characters of Maggie, Negan and Daryl. Along with that we begin production on the next chapter in Rick and Michonne’s unforgettable love story, which we look forward to sharing next year,” said McDermott as part of a larger announcement out of the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour via Variety. “This next phase of our beloved Walking Dead franchise promises to engage and enthrall faithful viewers.”
McDermott continued: “Fans new and old will love seeing zombies walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, beneath the Eiffel Tower, inside the Louvre, and at dozens more exotic and iconic locations from around the country and world.”
Here Are The Confirmed locations of The Walking Dead Spinoffs
New York
The Walking Dead: Dead City will be taking place in a post-apocalyptic New York. Enemies-turned-allies Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) must go on a rescue mission — confirmed to be a mission to rescue Herschel Rhee, Maggie’s son — in Manhattan, which is cut-off from the mainland. It is now filled with the dead. Survivors have made the iconic US city their own world of anarchy and terror. The Walking Dead spinoff is set to premiere sometime in June of 2023 on AMC and AMC+.
Paris, France
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will center on TWD fan-favorite Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus). He was last seen heading west, “as he wakes up and finds himself somewhere on the European continent and tries to piece together what happened,” according to McDermott. “How did he get here? How’s he going to get home?”
Reedus reveals some details about The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. “Somehow I get put there, and I don’t go there on my own free will.” The Walking Dead spinoff has been filming in France since October. The series will feature the “variant cohort” walkers teased in World Beyond. The show will also take place in iconic locations including the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum. “We’re destroying the Louvre and stuff,” Reedus teased. “It’s gonna be nuts.”
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon series premieres later in 2023.
Philadelphia
One of the biggest news that came out of The Walking Dead panel at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con was the about The Walking Dead spinoff show reuniting Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). Titled The Walking Dead: Rick & Michonne, the spinoff series will take place in a post-apocalyptic Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where the CRM has made their base at the fortified Civic Republic. World Beyond revealed Rick’s helicopter flight took him to the Civic Republic after disappearing in Season 9 of The Walking Dead.
In the final scenes of the series finale of The Walking Dead, audiences last saw Rick recaptured by the Civic Republic Military outside the Civic Republic on the New Jersey side of the Delaware river. Meanwhile, Michonne continues her cross-country search for Rick which leads her to a canyon filled with walkers — a location never before seen in The Walking Dead Universe.
The Walking Dead: Rick & Michonne spinoff series was originally set for a 2023 release, but now has been pushed to sometime in 2024.
