The Willow series has arrived on Disney+. Almost 35 years later, Lucasfilm is taking audiences back to the world of Willow with a series titled with the same name and Warwick Davis is reprising his role as the beloved character.
The series picks up years after Willow and Madmartigan defeated the evil Queen Ravmorda. The realm is now in peace ruled by Queen Sorsha (Joanne Whalley returns to the role). Peace in Tir Asleen is threatened when Sorsha’s son Airk (Dempsey Bryk) is kidnapped by a mysterious force. Now Willow must once again take use Cherlindrea’s want to battle the forces of darkness — this time, with a new band of warriors by his side.
What To Know About 1988’s Willow Film
Willow tells the story of an unlikely hero, a farmer by the name of Willow Ufgood (played by Warwick Davis). The peaceful land in which he resides is suddenly threatened by an evil queen who seeks to destroy mankind. With his newfound courage and help from an apprentice sorcerer, three small warriors, and some peculiar creatures called Brownies, Willow embarks on an epic quest to protect the world from destruction. Along this journey, he discovers within himself powers greater than he ever imagined.
Willow’s cast from the 1988 film includes Val Kilmer as Madmartigan, with Joanne Whalley playing opposite him as Princess Sorsha. Other cast members include Jean Marsh as Queen Bavmorda and Billy Barty as High Aldwin. It was directed by Ron Howard and produced by George Lucas! It also gained critical acclaim for its special effects – something we don’t often see in fantasy movies today.
At its core, 1988’s Willow is about finding inner strength and courage in times of difficulty. Through bravery and perseverance, even seemingly impossible tasks can be accomplished. The film also serves as a reminder that even those who may appear insignificant can become heroes when they least expect it!
