Dwayne Johnson a.k.a The Rock confirms Black Adam vs. Henry Cavill’s Superman will happen in the DCEU — eventually.
The DC Extended Universe began in 2013 with Cavill’s Man of Steel, but Johnson has been trying to play Black Adam long before that. Audiences are now less than two weeks away from finally seeing The Rock as Black Adam.
As the final DC movie of 2022, Johnson makes his DCEU debut alongside members of the Justice Society of America. Black Adam is confirmed to connect to the wider cinematic universe, including an appearance by The Suicide Squad’s Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). There’s been speculation that Black Adam will include or at least reference Superman.
For as long as Johnson has been attached to DC, the WWE superstar has teased the potential big-screen Black Adam vs. Superman fight. Back in 2016, Cavill posted an image with Johnson teasing their excitement for the future. Johnson has continued to the hype up fans, including a recent tease that he always listens to them.
While on a press tour for Black Adam, Johnson was once again asked about a potential fight with Superman during an interview with CinemaBlend. Because of the frequent teases Johnson makes, the publication asked him if he plans to make a Black Adam vs. Superman movie. He doesn’t mince words in his reply. He stated “absolutely.”
Here’s the excerpt from interview:
Absolutely. That is the whole point of this man. Thank you for asking that. And I have been saying for some time, there’s a new era in the DC Universe that’s about to begin. And what I meant by that was introducing a brand new character. It’s not a sequel, not an existing IP. It was…you know, Black Adam! Two years ago the world had no idea who he was. We did, but not, you know, the rest of the mass out there. Introducing the JSA, introducing that new era of the DC universe. But also what I really meant by, ‘This is a new era in the DC Universe,’ is listening to the fans. Listening to the fans. And doing our best to give the fans what they want. And maybe, sometime down the road — and I went through this in pro wrestling — is you can’t always give them what you want. But you’ll always know that we’re listening. And in this case, with what you and I are talking about, I have been listening and I’ve been wanting to address fans for years. Because I’ve been waiting for someone to step up and address the fans and say, ‘Hey, we hear you.’ So finally, after many months turned into many years, we ended up with what we ended up at. And the whole goal and intention now is to this new era, new time. Now let’s build out.
The plan for a Black Adam and Superman encounter is also likely a positive sign for Henry Cavill returning as Superman and for fans of Man of Steel. Warner Bros. has not used Cavill’s Superman since 2017’s Justice League. Zack Snyder did reshoots of Superman with Cavill for his complete version of Justice League that debut on HBO Max back in 2021. Other than that, WB only used a faceless version of Superman in Shazam! and Peacemaker.
Unless there’s a recast in the future, Johnson’s Black Adam tease could finally mean Cavill’s Superman will fly again in the DCEU.
Black Adam premieres in theaters October 21. Black Adam tickets are now available.
