Hugh Jackman officially will be back as Wolverine in Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3. It’s been a while since we’ve heard any updates about the Merc With The Mouth. Finally on Tuesday afternoon, Ryan Reynolds confirmed on his social media that Jackman will be coming back to play Wolverine one more time. He also gave an official release date for Deadpool 3 — September 6, 2024.
Here’s what Ryan Reynolds said in the video announcing Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine (you can also watch the video below):
“Hey everyone, we’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next ‘Deadpool’ film for a good long while now,” Reynolds says, referencing the D23 Expo that happened recently in September. “I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning. Every ‘Deadpool’ needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside. And I…I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have one idea.”
Then you can catch a glimpse of someone walking behind Reynolds.
“Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Reynolds asks as Hugh Jackman walks by in the background.
“Yeah, sure, Ryan,” Jackman replies. The video ends with Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” — subtitled as “I will always love Hugh” and a “Coming Hughn” teaser. Then the Deadpool logo appears, then quickly gets slashed by Wolverines iconic three slice marks finishing with the official release date.
Shawn Levy, who made Free Guy, Adam Project with Ryan Reynolds and also heavily involved with Netflix’s Stranger Things, will direct Deadpool 3 starring Reynolds and now Hugh Jackman.
Deadpool officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Disney purchased 20th Century Fox. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who penned Deadpool 1 and 2 films will return to write Deadpool 3. Reese previously confirmed Deadpool 3 will remain an R-rated film even if its within the family-friendly MCU.
Deadpool 3 will not be the first time Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman would appear together as Deadpool and Wolverine. 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, an X-Men spinoff which focused more on Jackman’s character, featured Reynold’s Wade Wilson. But that version of Deadpool had his mouth sewn shut and acquired multiple mutant powers. He also didn’t wear his comic-accurate red and black costume. Reynolds finally got to portray the character properly in the R-rate Deadpool movie back in 2016.
Fans will finally see Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman together as the proper Deadpool and Wolverine when Deadpool 3 premieres in theaters September 6, 2024. You can check out Reynold’s announcement video below.
