The reign of Targaryens was upon us when the first House of the Dragon teaser trailer debuted last October. First look photos of the show’s main cast were also unveiled. The highly-anticipated series takes place hundreds of years before the events of Game of Thrones.
The 10-episode series will be led by Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. It will also feature Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Milly Alcock, Emily Carey, Graham McTavish, Ryan Corr, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Matthew Needham, Bill Patterson, Gavin Spokes, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Savannah Steyn, and Theo Nate.
House of the Dragon is inspired by George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood. The showrunners are writer Ryan Condal and director Miguel Sapochnik. As reported before, the story centers on a civil war between House Targaryen, the Dance of the Dragons, over succession of the Iron Throne.
The show wrapped production in London earlier this year and has been teased by Martin himself on his live journal.
“I’ve seen a rough cut of the first episode. And loved it,” Martin writes. “It’s dark, it’s powerful, it’s visceral… just the way I like my epic fantasy.”as being “dark,” “powerful.” and visceral.”
House of the Dragon premieres Aug. 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
