HBO released a new teaser trailer for their highly anticipated Game of Thrones spinoff series, House of the Dragon, and it didn’t disappoint. You’ll see a couple dragons, dragon eggs, and a lot of long blonde hair.
House of the Dragon Is Set Hundreds of Years Before the Events of Game of Thrones show
House of the Dragon series serves as a prequel to the Game of Thrones show. It’s based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which is the prequel to his Song of Ice and Fire. Where Game of Thrones featured the last known Targaryen’s quest to regain the Iron Throne, House of the Dragon will focus more on the Targaryens’ reign and what led to their demise.
The House of Dragon’s new teaser trailer shows familiar families from the Game of Thrones bending the knee to King Viserys Targaryen. We see Lord Rickon Stark, an ancient ancestor of the Stark family that GoT fans already know, but not to be confused with Eddard’s youngest son. You’ll see Boremund Baratheon, an ancestor to Robert, as well as Corlus Velaryon, the leader of the house that fell against the Baratheon banner.
Westeros follows a historical precedent of sons succeeding their fathers to the Iron Throne. Viserys chose his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir and that will result in a major conflict within the kingdom and especially among the Targaryens.
George R.R. Martin co-created the House of the Dragon and also serves as executive producer. The co-showrunner and writers are Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik along with Sara Hess.
The House of the Dragon cast includes Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Prince Rhaenys Targaryen, Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower
In the world of franchise universes, House of the Dragon is only the beginning of HBO’s planned Game of Thrones Universe. There were five spinoff ideas but only House of the Dragon moved forward.
New show announcements have been made, including a series based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas and an animated series for HBO. There are also three projects with the same scope as the flagship show and its prequel like 10,000 Ships — a story set in Flea Bottom about the warrior-queen Princess Nymeria who founded Dorne.
The 10-episode prequel series will premiere August 21, 2022 on HBO and HBO Max. You can watch the new House of the Dragon teaser trailer below and let us know in the comments section if you see any interesting Easter Eggs. You can also watch the first teaser in case you missed it.
